Antiregurgitation (AR) formulas contain all of the nutrients that standard formulas do and also have thickening agents added to them. These thickeners can help reduce spitting up.

AR formulas can be helpful for babies who experience mild to moderate regurgitation.

What should I look for in an AR formula?
  • Has a digestible thickening agent. Precooked cornstarch is easily digested and absorbed. Some forms of carob bean gum and locust bean gum are indigestible and may cause gas.

  • Thickens in the stomach, not in the bottle, so that it flows easily through the nipple.

  • Tastes similar to standard infant formula, which makes it more acceptable to baby.

  • Provides complete and balanced nutrition, including beta-carotene/natural carotenoids and nucleotides.
