Partially hydrolyzed formulas, which are commonly known as hypoantigenic (HA) formulas, have the same protein source as standard formulas, but some of the protein has been broken down into smaller segments pieces to help reduce the risk of an allergic reaction. HA formulas are recommended for children with a family history of cow’s milk allergy (CMA). HA formulas are not appropriate for children with confirmed CMA. Although the protein in HA formulas is partially hydrolyzed, some of the protein fragments that remain are large enough to induce a reaction in infants with confirmed CMA. HA formulas have a distinctive odor and taste because of the special processing they undergo. What should I look for in a partially hydrolyzed formula?
Wyeth’s partially hydrolyzed HA formula meets all of these requirements.
