During pregnancy
Although mothers used to be told to prepare their nipples during pregnancy by rubbing and "toughening" them, studies have shown that these exercises don't help to prevent soreness. Reading and learning about breastfeeding may be the best preparation you can do.

Right after birth
It is recommended that you start nursing your baby as soon as possible after delivery. Most babies will be alert and eager to suck throughout the first 2 hours after birth.

During the first few days of nursing, a yellowish fluid called colostrum is released from the breasts. Colostrum is an important source of antibodies that help protect your baby against various diseases until the baby's own body begins to develop antibodies.

Your milk will probably come in on the second or third day after you give birth. Sometimes, it won't come in until the fourth day. At first, the milk will be mixed with colostrum. After a few days, the milk will become whiter.

Caring for yourself while nursing
To breastfeed successfully, you should eat correctly. A well-balanced diet is necessary during pregnancy and is particularly important while you are nursing. You will probably have to increase your daily food intake by 500 calories. Most nursing women also find that they are thirstier than usual. Be sure to drink whenever you are thirsty to help ensure that your fluid intake is adequate.

Unless prescribed by your doctor, drugs of any kind should not be taken during your pregnancy or while breastfeeding because they can be transmitted to the baby through your milk. You should also avoid alcohol and cigarettes during this period.
