Common Concerns

Are changes in stools during weaning normal?
Your baby's stools are likely to change when he or she begins eating solid foods. Changes in color, consistency, and odor are to be expected. Stools may also sometimes contain undigested particles of food.

However, if your baby has a lot of gas, diarrhea, or stomach upset, stop feeding the suspect food and consult your health care professional. These symptoms may signal food intolerance or allergy.

What if my baby refuses a particular food?
If your child absolutely refuses a food, try it again the next day. If this continues for 2 or 3 days, stop offering it for a while. Rejection of a particular food may indicate that your baby does not yet appreciate its taste and texture. Attempting to force your child to eat a food despite his or her utter and unrelenting refusal reinforces a strong dislike for that food—a dislike that may persist through adulthood.
