Common Concerns

Are juices okay for weaning infants?
Fruit juice—that is, 100% fruit juice, not a "fruit drink" that includes other ingredients—can be a healthy part of a well-balanced diet. However, juice should never be used as a replacement for breast milk or formula. Excessive consumption of juice may reduce intake of the important essential nutrients found in these milks.

Juice should not be introduced into your infant's diet before he or she is at least 6 months of age and has begun to drink from a cup. Babies should not be given juice to drink from a bottle throughout the day, because prolonged sucking of fluids that contain carbohydrates puts them at risk for "nursing-bottle tooth decay." Avoid giving your baby more than 240 mL of juice per day; too much juice may increase the risk of loose stools and diarrhea.

Should infants be given supplemental water during weaning?
Additional water may be offered in warm weather. Please consult your health care professional for advice about your baby's water needs.
