Though it may seem early to worry about chronic disease during childhood, research has shown that children who avoid a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet may decrease their risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. Researchers have found that the plaque that leads to atherosclerosis, or “clogging of the arteries,” can begin to form during childhood. As a result, experts recommend that young children adopt a heart-healthy diet after they celebrate their second birthday. What is a heart-healthy diet? After 2 years of age, experts recommend that fat consumption be limited to no more than 30% of total daily calories. In addition, saturated fat should account for only 10% of daily calories, and dietary cholesterol should also be limited to less than 300 mg per day. Low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol foods include poultry, fish and lean meat (boiled, baked or roasted—not fried), and low-fat dairy products. PROMISE GOLD can be a heart-healthy supplement to your young child’s diet. PROMISE GOLD has an all-vegetable fat blend that is low in saturated fat—it accounts for less than 7% of its calories. And it’s low in cholesterol, with just 5.6 mg of cholesterol per serving.
