During the second 6 months of life, infant vision is maturing just in time to play a key role in early motor and cognitive development. You’ll notice that your baby now can track moving objects, carefully inspect objects, and closely watch your every move. Scientists are learning that young children’s eyes can be particularly vulnerable to “blue” light in the visible light spectrum, which can be harmful because, unlike certain other types of light rays, it is not filtered by the cornea and lens before it reaches the retina at the back of the eye. The biofactors AA and DHA are important for visual development during the first year of life. A recent study showed that babies whose diets were supplemented with AA and DHA during the second 6 months of life had significantly better visual acuity at 12 months of age than babies fed unsupplemented formula. Unfortunately, most weaning foods and standard follow-on formulas are not good sources of AA and DHA. A fortified follow-on formula can be an effective way to provide older babies with a daily source of this important biofactor. PROMIL GOLD is fortified with balanced levels of AA and DHA to help support visual development. Vitamin A plays an important role in the conversion of light energy in neural signals necessary for proper vision. It’s also enriched with natural mixed carotenes—biofactors that can convert to vitamin A if necessary.
