The second trimester (months 4, 5, and 6) of your pregnancy is the time when you will feel the first fetal movements and start to look undeniably pregnant. The fetus is also starting to look obviously human—with eyelashes, hair, and a tendency to suck its thumb.

Your month 4

  • Your morning sickness will not be as much of a problem and may go away completely by the end of the second trimester.

  • You will need new clothing to fit your growing waist.

  • You may notice increased salivation—sometimes related to nausea—and increased sweating.

  • You may now start to feel fetal movement.

Baby's month 4
By the first week of this trimester—week 13 of gestation—the fetus is fully formed, so for the rest of your pregnancy it will grow in size and its organs will fully mature.

By week 14, there is a pronounced weight increase, with the average fetus reaching about 64 g (2 1/4 oz). Only 1 week ago the weight would have been just 28 g (about 1 oz). Ultrasound devices can detect a heartbeat at this point, and the fetus can curl its tiny fingers into fists. At 16 weeks, fetal movements are vigorous, and the muscles are becoming stronger. Fine hair, called lanugo, covers the entire body, and the beginnings of eyebrows can be seen.

Your month 5

  • If you haven't had heartburn yet, you may get it during this month.

  • Skin and hair changes become more obvious now. You may also develop a darkened area on your face, in the form of a butterfly pattern, called chloasma. Moles may now darken and become larger. Usually this is not a problem, but your health care professional should see any mole that changes in size or color to rule out skin cancer.

Baby's month 5
The fetus is now growing at a very rapid pace. By week 20, it is approximately 25 cm (10 in) long. Teeth are forming in the jaw, and growing musculature is resulting in even more vigorous activity. You will now start to feel these movements as tiny flutters against your abdomen.

Your month 6

  • By now you may have noticed many changes in your veins. You may have, or be getting, spidery purple lines up and down your thighs or around your chest. You may have varicose veins or hemorrhoids.

  • By this point in the trimester you will have achieved almost half of your total pregnancy weight gain. Your waist and your hips will have thickened.

  • Increased urinary frequency, and sometimes infection, occurs as your uterus gets larger and puts more pressure on your bladder.

  • Vaginal discharges become heavier now, and yeast infections are more common. Talk to your health care professional about the best way to treat them.

Baby's month 6
At 24 weeks, the fetus has grown to about 33 cm (13 in) and can cough and hiccup. The fat stores it will need to survive outside the womb haven't appeared yet, so the fetus may seem rather thin. (These fat stores will start to appear about a month later, at week 28.) In this final week of the second trimester, the lungs have matured to the point where the fetus could breathe on its own outside the womb.
